2018 BSB Community Volunteer and Involvement

Clean up at Jennie Dean Park

During the spring when it wasn’t raining and had warmed up nicely, BSB joined with other organizations for Volunteer Arlington Day. We were assigned to clean up the water stream at Jennie Dean Park; it was a productive day and our accountants had a great time counting the number of straws and bottles that they collected.

Flint Hill Cemetery Volunteer Day

Our second volunteer event of the year was a landscaping effort at Flint Hill Cemetery; it is one of the oldest cemeteries in Fairfax County, and contains the remains of many civil war veterans. Some of our enthusiastic CPAs took to the lawns, landscaping and spent the property with some fantastic display of teamwork.

Thanksgiving Food Donation

BSB’s food donations to Facets Cares Local Charity in Fairfax was a huge success. We gathered over 150 items of canned goods and packaged food. It was worth the heavy lifting seeing the smiles on everyone’s faces at the donation center.

Toys for Tots Donations
Participating each year in Toys for Tots has become a long-held tradition for BSB. This year, we collected over 100 toys to be distributed to children around the country.

We are so thankful to all the hardworking, charitable staff at BSB who volunteered in our community for 2018. We hope to not only be a firm that takes care of our clients, but also a firm that takes care of the people and the organizations in our community. We are looking forward to another wonderful year of service, both to our clients and to the community beyond, in 2019.

Welcome Our New Staff

BSB celebrated our 40th anniversary in 2018. On a mission to continue to grow and expand our business in 2018, we welcome five new members to our BSB team.

Bennett A. Ababio, EA, Supervisor-  Bennett has worked the last 8 years in the accounting industry, most recently at PWC in Baltimore, MD. Prior to that, he attended UNC and Bowie State, graduating with a bachelor’s degree in accounting. Bennett specializes in tax preparation, from business, to individual, estates and trusts, and more. Outside of taxes, he enjoys church activities with his wife and three children, playing and watching soccer, and taking in the occasional action movie. And like Kofi (see below), Bennett is originally from Ghana.

Kofi Owusu-Bona, CPA, Cr. Fa, Senior Accountant – Kofi recently moved to Virginia, having lived in Toronto, Michigan, and Ohio, all since 1993 when he moved from Ghana. In addition to practicing as an accountant, Kofi has also taught accounting at the community college level. His experience extends to both taxes, and to the audit and assurance side of the house. In his spare time, Kofi is a “hard-core” hockey and soccer fan.  He also enjoys spending time with his teenage son.

Josephine (Josie) Heck, Staff Accountant – Josie was born and raised in northern Virginia, and she has come back! Josie graduated from Miami University of Ohio with her bachelor’s degree in accounting and is currently pursuing her master’s degree in accounting at American University.  The proud aunt and premiere babysitter of 2 nieces, she loves spending time at the beach or with family and friends, and even better – both!

Courtney Trowbridge, Staff Accountant – Courtney relocated from Richmond, Virginia where she recently graduated from the University of Richmond, earning her BS in accounting with a minor in French. The past two summers, Courtney worked as a tax intern at a Missouri resort, combining her enthusiasm for numbers and the travel industry. Originally from St. Louis, Courtney is happy to make the east coast her new home. In her free time, she enjoys being with friends, playing sports, and traveling.

Irena Shamo, Staff Accountant – Originally from Albania, Irena came to USA in 2007.  She holds an MBA  in management. For more than 6 years she has built her accounting supporting experience by working in different industries such as United Bank, Onsite Health, and AOL. She joined the BSB team in September 2018. She loves to travel and spending time with her family and friends.  stephen

Stephen Greer, Senior – Stephen is another boomerang. After working for BSB for two years, Stephen expanded his experience with firms who specialize in the area of government  contracting and auditing. But he missed BSB, and we missed him. Happily back with us, Stephen is back to the broader tax, accounting, and assurance world. Stephen is a GMU grad, who enjoys the great outdoors, rebuilding his Jeep Wrangler (it passed inspection!) and above all, time with family, including a lovely wife and one-year-old handful, Ellington.

We are happy to welcome these new (and not so new) members to our BSB community and look forward to the new personality, individuality, and experience they will bring to our team.

BSB Reigns as 2018 Champion in Fairfax Adult Softball (FAS) League

We finally did it! BSB finished the 2018 softball season as league champions with a 13-1 record, their first winning season. We interviewed Kevin Hamaker, our talented coach, to get his take on how BSB achieved this lofty and well-earned honor. His response was:

  • Todd, one of our ace pitchers, scared the opposing sluggers with his Hannibal Lector mask.
  • Practice?! You’re talking about practice…who needs practice? Not BSB…
  • BSB looked good and played well the whole season thanks to our professional uniforms.
  • This was the first season we finished with no injuries on the team.  #1 softball

We are excited to share this headline news with all BSB team members and our clients. We appreciate the players and fans who helped lead and support us to our first championship! Our current championship plaque is hanging outside of Kevin’s office. We hope to have many more added to that wall in the coming seasons.
